Locksmith FAQ: common questions about locks and doors in Israel

In short: SecureDoors Israel provides locksmith services across Israel and installs interior doors in Jerusalem and the surrounding area, Sunday to Friday (closed on Shabbat), in English, Hebrew and French. This locksmith FAQ gives straight answers to the questions we hear most often.

This page covers the questions that cut across all our services: where we work, when, in which languages, how pricing works, and the most common situations. Each service and guide has its own page with more detail.

Where should you start?

Three things to do before you call

  1. Say whether the door just slammed or was locked with the key: the way it gets opened is different.
  2. Photograph the cylinder from the outside and send it on WhatsApp: it helps identify the lock.
  3. Explain how to get into the building: floor, entrance code, intercom.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work everywhere in Israel?

For locksmith work, yes: we cover all of Israel from our base in Jerusalem. Interior doors are sold and installed only in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. The main towns we serve are listed on our service areas page.

Which days are you available?

Sunday to Friday. We are closed on Shabbat. We do not publish fixed hours, so call 055-508-8444 to check whether a visit is possible when you need it, and on Fridays, call early.

Do you speak English?

Yes. We work in English, Hebrew and French. You can describe the problem, understand the fix and ask your questions in English, even when your landlord, your building or the paperwork is in Hebrew.

How much does a locksmith cost in Israel?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the door, the type of lock or cylinder and the work involved. Opening a door that simply slammed shut is a very different job from replacing a security cylinder. Describe the situation and send a photo of the cylinder to get a quote.

My door slammed shut with the keys inside. What should I do?

Do not force the lock or try to get in through a window or balcony. Check whether a relative, your landlord or a neighbor has a spare key, then call 055-508-8444 and say whether the door just slammed or was locked with the key. If a young child or someone at risk is inside, call emergency services first.

Can a door be opened without damaging it?

Often, yes, when the door only slammed shut and was not locked with the key. If it was locked with the bolts thrown, the work usually goes through the cylinder, which often has to be replaced afterwards. That is why it helps to describe the situation clearly on the phone.

Do I need a new lock or just a new cylinder?

On most Israeli front doors, the cylinder (the part the key goes into) drives the whole lock. Replacing it is usually enough after lost keys, a move or when the key starts to stick. The full lock is replaced when the mechanism itself is broken, worn out or damaged in a break-in.

I just moved in. Should I change the cylinder?

It is a good idea. You have no way of knowing how many copies are out there: previous tenants, contractors, real estate agents, neighbors. A new cylinder is the simplest way to start with keys that only you control.

I lost my keys. Do I have to change the lock?

If the keys were stolen, or lost together with anything that links them to your address, change at least the cylinder. If you are sure they cannot be traced to your home the risk is lower, but a cylinder change is still the safest option.

What should I do right after a break-in?

Call the police on 100 and do not touch anything before they arrive. Photograph the damage for your insurance, then have the door secured: a forced lock or cylinder must be replaced so the home can be locked again.

What is a Pladelet door?

Pladelet (פלדלת) is the name of an Israeli manufacturer that became the everyday word for any steel front door. These doors usually have a multi-bolt lock driven by a cylinder. Upgrading their security normally starts with the cylinder.

Where do you install interior doors, and which types?

In Jerusalem and the surrounding area only. We offer modern design doors, sound-insulating doors, sliding polymer doors in white or cream, flush zero-line doors and doors with decorative glass.
