Practical guides
GuidesLocked out
If you are locked out, first make sure no person or pet is in danger inside (if so, call 102 or 100 immediately), then look for a spare key and do not force the door. If nobody can let you in, a locksmith can often open a door that has only slammed shut without damaging the lock; a door locked with the key needs more technical work.
Choosing a lock
To choose a security lock for an Israeli steel door, focus on the cylinder: the right length, protection against snapping, picking and drilling, and keys that can only be copied with an owner’s card. Your type of door, how many people hold a key and your budget then decide which level makes sense.
After a break-in
After a break-in, get out and call the police on 100 without touching anything, photograph the damage once the police have been, report the claim to your insurer with the police case number, and then have the door secured: a new cylinder and repairs to whatever was forced. After that, fix the weak point the burglars used.

Locked out? What to do right now
Call or WhatsApp 055-508-8444: it is the most direct way to get help. To make the first conversation count:
- Give the city and the full address, including the floor and the building entry code or intercom if there is one.
- Say whether the door just slammed shut or was locked with the key turned: they are not the same job.
- Describe the door: a steel Pladelet-type security door, a wooden door or something else. A photo of the lock sent on WhatsApp helps a lot.
- Flag anything urgent: a child or a vulnerable person alone inside, a stove left on, a running tap. If anyone is in immediate danger, call emergency services first (101 for Magen David Adom, 102 for the fire service).
- Have proof of address ready (your teudat zehut with its sefach, an arnona or electricity bill, or your lease): a responsible locksmith checks that it really is your home before opening the door.
Our guide locked out: what to do covers the first steps in more detail, and the door opening page explains how the job itself is done.
Which locksmith services do we offer across Israel?
We work on apartment and house entrance doors, in Jerusalem and throughout the country. The full list is on our locksmith services in Israel page:
- Door opening when you’re locked out, the door has slammed shut or you’ve lost your keys.
- Lock and cylinder replacement after lost keys, a move, a key that sticks or a worn cylinder. On an Israeli steel security door, it is often the cylinder (the part the key goes into) that gets replaced, not the whole locking mechanism.
- Lock repair when a lock catches, jams or no longer closes properly.
- Security locks and cylinders to upgrade an existing door.
- Securing your door after a break-in: our guide on what to do after a break-in also lists the practical steps to take.
- Free advice on whether your door and cylinder give you the level of security you need.
Which interior doors do we install in Jerusalem?
We supply and install interior doors in Jerusalem and the surrounding area, and only there. The range includes:
- modern design doors, plain or with decorative grooves;
- sound-insulating doors for bedrooms and home offices;
- sliding polymer doors in white or cream;
- flush “zero line” doors that sit level with the wall;
- doors with decorative glass.
Models and finishes are described on the interior doors in Jerusalem page. To get the conversation started, send us a WhatsApp photo of the door frame and tell us which rooms you’re doing.
Why choose a locksmith who speaks English?
Because you should understand exactly what is being fixed, replaced or recommended on your own front door. Many Anglo olim run into Israeli specifics they never dealt with in the US, the UK, Canada, South Africa or Australia:
- the Pladelet, a brand name that Israelis use for any steel security entrance door, standard in many apartments;
- the cylinder, the part you change so that old keys stop working;
- the va’ad bayit (building committee), which needs to be involved when the issue is the lobby door or another shared part of the building;
- the Israeli week, which starts on Sunday, with a short Friday before Shabbat.
We also speak Hebrew and French, which makes things easier when a landlord, a neighbor or the va’ad bayit joins the conversation.
When and where can you reach us?
We are based in Jerusalem and work Sunday to Friday; we are closed on Shabbat. For locksmith work we travel anywhere in Israel, and the cities we cover are listed on our service areas page. In an emergency, calling is the most direct route. For interior door questions or a quote request, WhatsApp or email to securedoorsisrael@gmail.com works just as well.
Frequently asked questions
Do you work on Shabbat?
No. SecureDoors Israel is closed on Shabbat and works Sunday to Friday. If you get locked out on a Friday, call as early in the day as you can: that gives the best chance of arranging a visit before Shabbat comes in.
How much does a lockout or a cylinder change cost?
It depends on the door, the lock, the cylinder you choose and where you are, which is why we don't publish a price list online. Describe the situation by phone or send a photo of the lock on WhatsApp, and ask for the price before you confirm the visit.
Do you install interior doors in Tel Aviv or Ra'anana?
No. Interior door supply and installation is limited to Jerusalem and the surrounding area. Locksmith work is different: door opening, cylinder and lock changes are available anywhere in Israel, including Tel Aviv and Ra'anana.
I'm renting. Can I change the cylinder on my front door?
Usually yes, but check your lease and let your landlord know, since they will probably want a copy of the new key. Keep the old cylinder: if the lease says the apartment must be returned as it was, you can simply put it back when you move out.
Is the security advice really free?
Yes. Tell us about your door, your lock and what is worrying you (lost keys, a previous tenant, an attempted break-in) and we'll tell you what is worth changing and what isn't. The decision is entirely yours.
