Tel Aviv-Yafo squeezes almost every kind of Israeli home into a few square kilometers: 1930s Bauhaus walk-ups in the White City, residential towers with a lobby and a concierge, 1960s and 70s apartment blocks, and old stone houses in Jaffa. It’s also a city of renters and roommates, where keys change hands all the time. SecureDoors Israel is based in Jerusalem, has over 10 years of experience, and works as a locksmith in Tel Aviv for apartments and houses, with someone on the phone who speaks your language.
What locksmith work do we do in Tel Aviv?
Lockouts, lock and cylinder changes, security upgrades and securing doors after a break-in, for apartments and houses anywhere in the city.
- Lockouts: door slammed shut with the keys inside, door locked with the key, key snapped in the cylinder, keys lost or stolen.
- Lock and cylinder changes: when you move in, when a roommate leaves, when the key sticks, or after losing keys.
- Security locks: upgrading to a cylinder that resists picking and snapping.
- Securing a door after a break-in, so you can lock it again.
- Free advice on making your front door more secure, by phone or from photos on WhatsApp.
One thing to know: we sell and install interior doors in Jerusalem and the surrounding area only. In Tel Aviv, we work purely as locksmiths.
Bauhaus walk-up, tower or Jaffa house: does it make a difference?
Yes. The type of building tells us what kind of door to expect and how we’ll reach it, which shapes how we prepare.
| Type of home | Typical neighborhoods | What we often find | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bauhaus and 1930s–1950s buildings | Lev HaIr, Rothschild Boulevard, Old North, Florentin | Narrow stairwells, often no elevator; original wooden doors or steel doors fitted later | On an old wooden door, the cylinder isn’t the whole story: the frame matters as much |
| Residential towers | Park Tzameret, Ramat Aviv Gimmel, newer towers in the center and south | Lobby with concierge, fob-operated elevators, recent steel door with a security cylinder | Let the lobby know, and plan who will ride up with the locksmith |
| 1960s–1980s apartment blocks | Yad Eliyahu, Bavli, Ramat Aviv, Kiryat Shalom | Early steel security doors, cylinders never changed since the building went up | A good candidate for a newer cylinder |
| Old houses and stone buildings | Jaffa, Ajami, Neve Tzedek, Kerem HaTeimanim | Heavy wooden doors, iron courtyard gates and grilles, old locks | Spare parts can be hard to find, so replacing often beats repairing |
Roommates and short-term rentals: who else has a key?
In Tel Aviv, usually more people than you think: former roommates, short-stay guests, cleaners, real-estate agents, contractors. If there’s any doubt, changing the cylinder makes every old key useless without touching the door or the lock. Unlike the knob-and-deadbolt setup common in North America, an Israeli steel door takes a removable euro-profile cylinder, so this is a quick job rather than a new lock.
We recommend it when:
- You move in, whether you rent or buy.
- A roommate leaves and doesn’t hand back every key.
- You let your place short-term: changing the cylinder from time to time cancels any copies made over the course of many stays.
- Your keys went missing together with something showing your address.
If you rent, four steps keep things smooth with your landlord:
- Check the clause in your lease about keys and changes to the apartment.
- Tell the landlord in writing; a WhatsApp message is enough and leaves a record.
- Have the cylinder replaced and keep the old one: many tenants put it back when they move out.
- If the lease requires it, give the landlord a copy of the new key.
How does a call-out in Tel Aviv work?
You call, we assess the situation remotely and tell you when we can get there. Ask for the price before any work starts.
- Call or WhatsApp 055-508-8444, ideally with a photo of the door and the cylinder.
- We tell you when we can be with you. We’re coming from Jerusalem, so travel time depends on the time of day and traffic; we’d rather give you an honest estimate than a promise.
- Ask for the price before we begin, then decide.
- Proof of residence: your teudat zehut with its address appendix, your rental contract, or confirmation from a neighbor or the landlord.
- Least destructive method first: a door that simply slammed shut usually opens without damage.

How can you make it easier to reach your apartment?
A few Tel Aviv details save a lot of time on the day:
- Entry codes and intercoms: give us the lobby code on the phone or wait downstairs, especially if the intercom rings inside the locked apartment.
- Towers with a lobby: tell the concierge, who can also confirm you live in the building. If the elevator needs a fob, arrange for someone to ride up with the locksmith.
- Parking: it’s tough in the center and in Jaffa. Tell us about a building car park or a spot where we can pull over near the entrance.
- Jaffa and Neve Tzedek alleys: give us an easy meeting point if your door opens onto a courtyard or a passage.
- Fridays: call as early as you can. The city stays lively over Shabbat, but we’re closed. If anyone is in danger, call 100, 101 or 102.

Frequently asked questions
Does it cost more because you're coming from Jerusalem?
We don't publish prices: the cost depends on the job, the door and the location. Ask for the full price, travel included, on the phone before you confirm. That way you decide with all the numbers in front of you.
A short-term rental guest is locked out of my apartment. What should I do?
Call us yourself as the owner, or give the guest our number and stay reachable. Because the guest can't prove they live there, you confirm on the phone that you're authorizing the opening. For next time, leave a spare key with a neighbor or a property manager you trust.
The lock on our building's front door is broken. Who should call?
The lobby door is common property, so the va'ad bayit (building committee) or the building's management company normally arranges the repair. If you rent, report it to the va'ad bayit, which can contact us about the lock.
My Bauhaus apartment still has its original wooden front door. Is a new cylinder enough?
A security cylinder makes the lock much harder to pick, but an old wooden door is still weaker than a steel security door, especially around the frame. We'll tell you honestly what a cylinder change can and can't do for your particular door. That advice is free.
A roommate moved out without returning their key. Should we change the cylinder?
If you can't get the key back, yes: it's the only way to be sure nobody outside the apartment can still get in. Let your other roommates and the landlord know, and get a new key cut for each person living there.
